What to Expect at Your First Hair Extension Appointment

Booking your first hair extension appointment is exciting — but it's completely normal to have questions. What should you bring? How long will it take? Will it hurt? We've answered all of it below so you can walk in feeling confident and walk out obsessed with your new look.

Step 1: The Consultation

Every great extension install starts with a consultation. This is where we get to know your hair — its texture, thickness, current health, and your goals. We'll talk through which extension method is the best fit for your lifestyle and hair type, whether that's micro or nano beads, a sew-in weave, crochet braids, or another method.

Step 2: Preparing Your Hair

For most extension methods, you'll need to arrive with clean, dry, product-free hair. Avoid applying any oils, serums, or heavy conditioners the day of your appointment — these can interfere with the install. If you're unsure what to do beforehand, just ask when you book and we'll give you specific prep instructions for your chosen method.

Step 3: The Install

Once your hair is prepped, the install begins. Here's a rough idea of what to expect time-wise:

• Crochet braids: 2–4 hours depending on the style. Your hair is first cornrowed, then the crochet hair is looped through. Learn more about aftercare: How to Care for Crochet Braids.
• Sew-in weave: 3–5 hours. Your hair is braided into cornrows and wefts are sewn in row by row. See our care guide: How Long Do Sew-In Weaves Last?

Plan to be with us for a few hours — bring a snack, a podcast, or just enjoy the relaxation time!

Does It Hurt?

Most clients find hair extension installs comfortable. You may feel some light tension during braiding or bead placement, but it should never be painful. If anything feels too tight, always speak up — your comfort matters and a good install should never cause pain or excessive tension on your scalp.

What to Bring

• Inspiration photos of the length, volume, or style you're going for
• A hair tie or clip to keep your hair out of the way during prep
• Comfortable clothing — you'll be sitting for a few hours
• Any hair you've purchased in advance (if applicable to your method)

After Your Appointment: Aftercare Tips

Your stylist will walk you through aftercare before you leave, but here are the basics to keep in mind:

• Avoid washing your hair for the first 48–72 hours after install to let everything settle.
• Sleep with a satin bonnet or on a satin pillowcase to reduce friction.
• Use gentle, sulfate-free products on your extensions.
• Book your maintenance appointment in advance — most methods require a check-in every 6–8 weeks.
